With joyful memories, the family of John Charles Vogel, of Columbus, Ohio, announce his passing the afternoon of Wednesday, August 23, 2017, in Newark, Ohio. Known as Wahl by many, John was born in Columbus, Ohio on May 19, 1949. A graduate of the Ohio State Universityand past president of the Columbus Landscape Association, John was a skilled and knowledgeable landscape horticulturist who loved soulful music, delicious food, and big stories. Passionately devoted to family, John is survived by his sons, Justin and Andrew; daughter-in-law, Christen Taylor; and loving wife, Susan Salina of Newark, Ohio. John was preceded in death by beloved wife Susan Elizabeth Vogel (2004) and parents Richard (1997) and Mary Frances (2006). John is additionally survived by sisters, Mary Paisley, Barbara Morin, Ann Bush, Theresa Pace, Irene Tyack, Jean Sephel; and brother, Joe Vogel; along with a large and tightknit extended family. He will also be missed by the Salina family, step-sons, Scott, Mark; daughter-in-law, Jill; and grandchildren, Jameson, Emaleigh, and Landen. A funeral mass will be read in John's name at the family parish, Saint James the Less in North Columbus (1652 Oakland Park Avenue, 43224), the morning of Thursday, August 31 at 8:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in John's name to Dawes Arboretum where a Swamp White Oak will be planted (dawesarb.org, tel. 740-323-2355). A memorial celebration is planned for the evening of Friday, September 1 at 6 p.m., also at St. James.
